Everyone is called to protest, regardless of race
According to Newsweek, a series of strikes will take place on June 19 — this day in the United States is a holiday associated with the abolition of slavery. The organizers told the Washington Post that they were calling for a general strike on this day to show solidarity in the fight against police brutality, whose next victim, late Friday night, Friday, June 12, was Reichard Brooks.
Brooks was killed by police near the Wendy’s restaurant, where, while drunk, he fell asleep at the wheel of his car and blocked the driveway to the restaurant. The officers who arrived at the scene, having determined that Brooks were drunk, tried to detain the man, but he resisted, took the stun gun from the police and started to run away — as a result of which the 27-year-old African-American was shot dead.
The organizers are the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement and trade union organizations, one of which is the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU — International Union of Warehouse and Port Workers).
“We believe that the most effective way to stop police terror is through the actions of the working class in the workplace: if the working class wants to be heard, then it must learn to fight.”
«For years, ILWU in general and Local 10 in particular have been protesting against racism. We understand that these killings can only be stopped if the crimes have economic consequences,” Newsweek quoted Clarence Thomas, former secretary-treasurer of ILWU Local 10.
